Even though the PS Vita is highly underrated it still has a share of free games to play, just like it's home console counterparts. Being an overlooked console many of these games aren't going to be Call of Duty caliber but they can be the entertainment you need right at the moment.
While the quality of these games is highly varying and limited in number, there's still some that deserve attention. Metacritic sure does have a lot to say about these mostly middling games, so it will be used as the quality basis for this list.
So here are 10 of the best free games on the PS Vita, according to Metacritic. It shows off the Augmented Reality hardware, but not much else. People complained it was far to short even for a free game, there just wasn; 't overall that much to do in it to make it worth a higher score. The gameplay was more like quick-time event to quick-time event, lacking any other gameplay. So in general, it's just a tech demo that you can enjoy for maybe an hour. With the market of freemium games out there it simply doesn't hold up.
Crazy Market takes on the full freemium package and gives you half an hour's worth of gaming at a time. It's still a playable game, but not one you can put hours into without paying. Get Off My Lawn is a simple vertical shooter that is ramped up with microtransactions.
The main complaint many had with this game is the major grinding needed for the upgrades in the game. Like 10, type numbers and for every alien you shoot you get only points. This leads to major in-game currency popping in your face for you to buy your way to the upgrades which, in a game only motivated by upgrades, it doesn't really work.
Breakquest: Extra Evolution is the first fully free game on this list. Even though its name is easily misassociated with breakfast, reviewers seemed to have a good amount of fun with it and getting through its levels. This game is essentially a PS Vita port of the Breakquest franchise, but some were disappointed it did not live up to the graphics capability of the PS Vita. It can still be a game you can enjoy for what it's worth on the Vita.
This game is a major microtransaction hole based on reviews. It takes on the endless runner persona with Sackboy's face on it, while not having anything that made people love Little Big Planet. Its gameplay is much in the tune of the endless runners from Sonic and Mario and has many of the same gameplay woes where many felt it simply got too repetitive after the excitement wore off. Being the goal of the game is upgrades and costumes, much of the gameplay is reliant on an in-game currency which you have to continuously spend in if you run out and want to keep playing.
Vitamin Z is a simple free to play game, that reviewers had enjoyed. It doesn't seem to be as much of a microtransaction hole as the other games before this entry but overall is seen as mindless fun. It's a shooter with increasing difficulty in levels, but with cartoony graphics and style.
It was seen as a middling game but viewed as passable for a free game for the PS Vita, something that's limited for this console. As put by a Metacritic reviewer "This game is for strategy game virgins. A lot of features worn on players after a while such as the gameplay and music, which was on a short loop and seen as out of place.
Many of the units for fighting were unclear on exactly what they did leaving players confused as well. Many felt though it missed the mark on being what they were looking for while playing it.
The biggest advantage most felt was the online multiplayer also being free in the game, even though they have paid packs for DLC. The biggest complaint with this game is it's unbelievable wait times, in other words, several hours to recharge for 3 minutes of gameplay. Unfortunately, no one seemed pleased buying the full version of the game and saw it as a cash rip off.
It was bogged down by glitches even though many loved the gameplay, which they could only take in very small increments. It also limited the number of uses per day to 5, making it a mostly microtransaction hole of a game. You are now at the point in this list where the games are considered good. People rave at Zen Pinball 2 's options and how intuitive it is with the Vita.
It's seen as a major expansion on previous entries and includes a lot of their special tables. Unfortunately, the game isn't really free as you have to pay for a pack of tables after downloading it, and for all it's tables it would be a high cost. Many reviewers claim it's just the PS3 demo re-released onto the Vita claiming to be a full game. It is put along the same line as Warioware as far as quirkiness with its minigames. This game does have DLC packs, however, it does not fall into the freemium category, which makes it a full free game to play.
